Ever since I first saw the work of German artist Michael Sowa I was inspired, particularly a painting of a small duffle-coated rabbit trotting down a damp street. Many years later I eventually painted this image of a lonely bear caught in the head lights of a passing car.
As I started work on this piece a friend of mine was battling with a serious drug problem and as so often happens with me, his plight gradually made it's way into the painting.
The sack trolley came to represent the hard and empty life he felt he was living, and the heavy weight of the rat shadow sitting in the trolley became away for me to describe the devastating burden of drugs.
